INDIA DONATES US DOLLAR ONE MILLION FOR DAMAGES CAUSED BY
VOLCANOES IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA IN JUNE 2019

India’s High Commissioner Vijai Kumar, on behalf of the Government of India, handed over a cheque for PNG Kina 3,395,585.75, equivalent to US Dollar One Million, to Honourable Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, H.E. Mr. James Marape, at the Parliament House in Port Moresby on 3 September 2019, as India’s financial assistance to the Government of Papua New Guinea for relief and restoration work in areas affected by the volcanoes on Mount Ulawun and in Manam Island in June 2019. PNG's Minister for Defence, Minister for Petroleum, and Vice Minister in Prime Minister’s Office were also present at the ceremony, in addition to senior Government officials.

This follows a donation of similar amount, extended by the Government of India to the Government of Papua New Guinea in July 2019, for relief and restoration work in the areas, which were affected by the earthquake inFebruary 2018.

The High Commissioner had fruitful discussions with the Honourable Prime Minister during the handing over ceremony. The topics discussed included bilateral relations, trade and investment, capacity building measures and human resource development.
